English Language Learners PLD

English Language Learners PLD

English Language Learners are a growing and diverse group of students in New Zealand Schools. While research on reading, writing and how we learn applies to all, there are additional considerations for students who are learning the English language at the same time as they are learning to read and write. Tātai Angitu’s 2-Day Structured Literacy Approaches for English Language Learners course offers practical PLD for classroom and ELL/ESOL teachers supporting English Language Learners.

Over two days, teachers will gain an understanding of:

  • English Language Learners cultural, linguistic and educational diversity in the New Zealand context.

  • First and second language development in support of planning successful literacy outcomes.

  • Assessment considerations when working with English Language Learners through a structured literacy approach.

  • Best evidence practices established by research for improving literacy and language outcomes for English Language Learners aligned to the English Language Areas in Te Mātaiaho NZC English.

  • Working with students who have different L1 writing systems.

  • The role of students' home language, family and prior knowledge as assets for developing bilingualism and biliteracy

  • Trauma informed practices for students from a former refugee background.

Teachers are invited to bring an overview of ELL students on their roll and their school data for a target ELL student to develop an SLA literacy profile.  By the end of the course Teachers will be equipped to develop a literacy profile for ELL students aligned to the oral language, reading and writing statements from the NZC English teaching sequences. Teachers will be familiar with using the Tātai Angitu Teacher kit and online library resources in support of English Language Learners.
