Teaching Writing and Growing Writers PLD

This short course focuses on the knowledge and skills students need to succeed as writers across the Years 0-8 pathway. Grounded in research, the English Learning Area, and practice from real classrooms, the course is delivered through flexible modules. These can be presented either as a one-day workshop or as four 1.5-hour workshops to suit a school’s needs. 

 

The four modules guide teachers from the foundations of transcription to the composition of whole texts, with examples of teaching routines and components of the writing process woven throughout.  

Module 1: Embedding the foundations

An overview: Key factors involved in writing success.

Transcription: An overview of handwriting and the components of spelling. 

Sentence Structure: Growing teacher knowledge about sentences; teaching techniques for simple expanded, simple compound, and complex sentences.  ​

Module 3: From Paragraphs to Texts 

Text Structure: Growing teacher knowledge about text structures for different purposes.

Multi-paragraph Compositions: Teaching techniques for planning, drafting, and writing multi-paragraph compositions, embedded within a classroom literacy programme. 

Culture and Community​​Building a classroom culture and community of writers through regular opportunities for sharing, celebrating effort and growth, and supporting students to see themselves as writers. 

Module 2: From Sentences to Paragraphs

Paragraph Structure: Growing teacher knowledge about paragraph structures for different purposes. 

​Paragraph Writing: Teaching techniques for planning, drafting, and writing paragraphs, embedded within a classroom literacy programme. 

Module 4: Assessment Focused Teaching 

Formative Assessment: Using the English Learning Area to identify and target teaching to support students to advance in capability as writers. 

Goal Setting and Feedback: Effective goal setting and feedback practices; developing self and peer evaluation and assessment capabilities.
