Teaching Assistant PLD
This course is designed to build teaching assistants’ knowledge and confidence in structured literacy so they can effectively support the students they work with and reinforce classroom teaching.
During this one-day workshop, participants will explore how teaching assistants can support literacy learning under teacher guidance by focusing on:
-
The core principles of structured literacy and code knowledge — understanding what to support and why
-
How scope and sequence works in practice, including cumulative review and purposeful practice
-
Supporting students to understand sentence structure so they can make meaning from texts
-
Strengthening comprehension through vocabulary, morphology, and discussion (read, write, respond)
Participants will also learn how their role can support classroom routines, reinforce teacher instruction, and maximise learning time for students who need additional support.
By the end of the workshop, teaching assistants will leave with practical strategies and ready-to-use resources they can apply immediately when working with learners, ensuring their support complements and strengthens classroom literacy instruction.
